Book Review: Mango People In Banana Republic By Vishak Shakti

Hi Friends,

Hope everyone is doing good!! I am back again with an another book review.
The book I will be talking about today is "Mango People In Banana Republic" By Vishak Shakti.

Plot Summary:
Ravi is a top of the rung business strategy consultant struggling with two disquiets in life- a festering career disillusionment and a festering wound in his posterior. He drops off the urban map and reaches his ancestral land in a village. On that mission he finds love, revolution and most importantly, a redemption for the disquiet in his rear.

Anand is a former physicist on a spiritual quest through esoteric India. He realizes that the path to realization is beset on all sides by gurus. As he hops from one ashram to another, he grows convinced that liberation does not come with a user maunal in a neat little box.

Wrapped in light- hearted, almost tongue-in-cheek prose, Mango People In Banana Republic is a tale of an Indian's search for personal identity, against the backdrop of a country divided along fault lines of countless social identities. Teeming with a cast of characters and ideas that encapsulate modern India, the tale ascends from the gross to the sublime, much like the Kundalini powers some aspire to acquire. With a steady pace, and a gentle mocking humor, this book is an absorbing read and a laugh.

My Review:
First starting with the book cover, it is quite intriguing. The title has an embossed feel to it, which I totally love!! Also, the cover is totally suitable as per the story line.

The seven chapters of the book are divided as per the seven spiritual chakras in a human body, which is quite interesting and unique for a Fiction book. The book has all the Masala into it, from instances from the Corporate work culture to Village life to Indian Country issues to Spiritual Journey & experiences. You name it and he has it in this book!

The writing style and characters are pretty simple and not at all complex or hard to understand. The book is about a journey of a man Ravi which starts from Stress, Frustration, Restlessness, Insecurities in today's materialistic & hectic corporate world to a more meaningful life of a self satisfaction.

People working in Corporate sector will surely enjoy and relate to some of the instances and Corporate Jargon like one on one, Appraisal meetings, deadlines etc. The author has included humor dialogues and witty statements from time to time to keep the read interesting enough. Though there were couple of chapters which seems to be stretched a lit bit.

Then there is an another character in the story named Anand, which is on an Spiritual mission or quest of self realization. He goes to an Ashram, The things and Kriyas he experienced there is well explained. There were things like Rules to be followed in an Ashram or reference to Kundalini powers.

I really appreciate the part where Author has explained the problems faced by the Indian farmers and the situation of the Politics in our country.

Overall the book is interesting enough for a one time read. Though it will not make up to my most favorites..It was an average read for me. Do give it a try!
