Book Review: Ashwatthama's Redemption- The Rise Of Dandak By Gunjan Porwal

Book Review: Ashwatthama's Redemption- The Rise Of Dandak By Gunjan Porwal

Hello Lovely Readers,

I love to read Mythology Fictions...Many Indian Authors are coming up with Indian Mythology Fictions in the recent time....No wonder our Indian Mythology is filled with various interesting stories and many larger than life characters!
Here comes an another one from my favourite list. Something I have absolutely loved reading from the page one!

Plot Summary: Over a hundred years after the Mahabharata War, an ancient power threatens to destroy the new Age Of Men, by establishing the Age Of Terror of the asuras, long believed to be extinct. The only hurdle in its path is Guru Dronacharya's son, the mighty but accursed warrior Ashwatthama, who lost all his powers following Lord Krishna's curse, and who unwillingly finds himself drawn into the quest of the lost bow of Lord Rama- the Kodanda.
As ghosts of the distant past return to haunt him, and the line between friends and enemies blurs, Ashwatthama must fight his inner demons to emerge victorious. He undertakes a perilous journey- across the vast plains of the Ganges, to the snow capped peaks of Himavant- where the price of failure is a fate worse than death, and death is a privilege not granted to Ashwatthama.

Is this all part of Lord Krishna's great plan? Will Ashwatthama be able to regain his lost glory?

My Review:

This is one of those few books for me, whose plot I have started to enjoy from the page one itself and completed the whole book without any moment of boredom. This is this book which belongs to one of my favourite Genre, but not every book can do justice to Mythology Genre..
Firstly, full marks for the beautiful cover. Totally apt and suitable for the story.

We all have heard about Mahabharata and Ramyana... But not much is known about the main character of this book 'Ashwatthama'.. He was a great warrior, who had a gem in his forehead. He fought in the greatest battle in the Indian history Mahabharata. He was cursed by Lord Krishna due to his sins & some mistakes which he did totally out of revenge against Pandavas and as a result he lost all his powers and got a fate to forever wander in the forests..

The story starts with Ashwatthama living a life in the forest with no meaning, he does not have any powers or a purpose of life. His only friend Vikram, King Of Surparaka came for his help to face & control Dandak, the greatest evil demon of all time as he was getting ready for resurrection. Only a demigod like Ashwatthama could kill him or control his resurrection.

The story and the flow are totally gripping and you have to finish it without a break. There are some Sanskrit verses mentioned in between, which gives an unique feel to the whole read. Totally loved the whole journey described through the forests & mountains, to get the Sacred Bow of Lord Ram, Kodanda. The whole story is build very interestingly where in only a demigod can use the Kodanda and Ashwatthama is the last one, the only living part incarnation of Lord Shiva. The greatest evil Dandak can only be killed by Lord Shiva.

My favourite chapters would be 'The Valley Of Illusions', 'Karma' 'The Yeti Kingdom'.
All the characters are well built and described properly. There are elements of friendship, love, magic, action, drama, suspense..Overall a great mix!
Do read the book to know what happened in the last, will Dandak come back or be killed?

If Indian Mythology interests you, especially the very famous and most heard tale of Mahabharata, then surely this book is for you. This book is surely one of my Favourites so far!
I totally enjoyed reading the book and surely look forward for the sequel.
